Sustainability Week 2017 - A Partnership to Build a More Sustainable Community

Post Date:09/06/2017 5:26 PM

Sustainability Week is a week-long slate of events held each year by the Town of Blacksburg in partnership with Virginia Tech and Sustainable Blacksburg, a local citizens’ group. This year, Sustainability Week will feature nearly 30 events and will be held during the third week in September. This year’s Sustainability Week kicks off on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 16 with a Bike Parade led by Mayor Ron Rordam.

Events throughout the week vary in terms of content and format, but have a common goal. “With a guiding mission of ‘Celebrate-Educate-Motivate,’ each Sustainability Week event has been designed to highlight innovative ideas and exemplary practices, while providing participants with realistic and practical steps to integrate sustainability into every facet of their day-to-day lives,” offered Town of Blacksburg Sustainability Manager, Carol Davis.

New this year will be the addition of a Kids’ Activities Passport, which will help connect our community’s future leaders to events that are kid and family friendly. Each child who gets at least four “stamps” in their passport, will receive a special prize, with a grand prize being offered to the child who participates in the most events.

This unique and successful partnership, now in its 11th year, has continued to grow and improve over time.  Last year, the partnership was honored to receive state level recognition as the recipient of a 2016 Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award.

In addition to the Kick Off Bike Parade and the Kids’ Activities Passport, here is a sampling of just a few of the events being planned for Sustainability Week 2017:
